Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Programs within the Athletic Department
Abstract
This project focuses on the need for mental health and suicide awareness programs within the athletic department. There is a stigma around mental health that needs to be broken and this project explores methods that could be implemented in any athletic department. The literature review consists of ten articles on mental health and suicide rates for athletes, along with the top five mental health disorders among college age students and their symptoms. The seminar for this project was completed Wednesday April 17th, 2019 at Carthage College. The seminar taught the athletes about mental health and suicide rates, and at the end three questions were asked and responses were gathered to help construct the next part of the program, which involves communicating the results to the coaches and administrators to create a mental health program for any athletic department.
