Regional Differences in Environmental Attitude
Abstract
The United States is a very unique location and is often considered the “melting pot” of the world because of its wide range of individuals from other countries. These groups of people coming from all over the world not only bring themselves but also cultural aspects of their lives. This study looks to see if this compilation of individuals has any unique differences in current topics such as environmental attitude. This study used a social survey from 1992, 1993, 2000, and 2010. An environmental attitude index was created and each respondent’s score fell within a range of 5-24. Research data was collected and compared with respect to basic demographic variables such as gender, generation, race, population of community, and level of education to see if there are any associations between these demographic variables and environmental attitudes. In the second part of this research, the same data was compared by region. For example if the association of gender and environmental attitude was different in the New England region versus the South Atlantic. This study found that there were differences in environmental attitude; however these differences were not significant.
