dc.description.abstractParking lot sealcoat consists of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are an environmental pollutant. Over time, PAHs from coal-tar (CT) and asphalt sealcoat (AS) have been found to be released into water systems. Parking lots and test plots containing CT, AS, and unsealed sites were analyzed by examining the initial sealcoat product, site scrapings, and washoff collected. One specific PAH found within coal-tar sealcoat, dibenzo[c,mno]chrysene (naphtha[1,2-a] pyrene, N[1,2-a]P), has similarities in structure to the carcinogenic PAH, dibenzo[a,l]pyrene. Analysis of N[1,2-a]P metabolites after introduction to male S9 fraction of Sprague Dawley rat liver cells in vitro suggested that N[1,2-a]P has carcinogenic characteristics. As a whole, coal-tar sealcoat was shown to contain carcinogenic PAHs, and the use of CT should be avoided.en_US
