Effectiveness of E85Abstract
Investigation into the production of alternative ethanol sources can provide new possibilities for this renewable fuel. As ethanol emits fewer greenhouse gases than traditional petroleum, cellulosic ethanol would provide even more yield through the various sources from which it can be produced. Economic and environmental effects of increasing ethanol concentration and incorporating woody and herbaceous biomass were studied. To project necessary future actions in ethanol production, policies were examined and analyzed. Evidence from the presented studies and policies demonstrate an economic and environmental benefit to increasing ethanol concentration and switching ethanol production to woody and herbaceous biomass. However, policies have to provide proper funding and administrative oversight in order for cellulosic ethanol to succeed. Cellulosic ethanol could replace at least 85 percent petroleum in gasoline in 5 years if supported by correct policy action and technological steps.
