dc.description.abstractThis study examined the relationship between the fluency of multiplication facts with higher level mathematical skills. It focused on the effect fluency in multiplication and division facts had on the mathematical computation and problem solving skills of sixth grade students in the general education classroom. Five sixth-grade students from a general education classroom in an urban school were selected for the study. Each student completed fluency training consisting of ten minute daily drill and one minute time testing on multiplication and division facts. Mathematical computation and problem solving activities were given weekly to probe the number of correct responses. All students' fluency rates increased during this study. The data from the mathematical computation problem solving probes indicated upward trends, but the gains shown were not as significant as the fact improvement. The results indicated that increasing fact fluency slightly increased computation and problem solving skills.en_US
