The main purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effectiveness of music and poems to achieve the implementation of National Standards, and to promote participation in the foreign language classroom. The National Standards proposed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) are: Communication, Communities, Culture, Comparisons and Connections. Thirty-seven students registered in two different second semester elementary Spanish language classes at a small Liberal Arts College in Wisconsin participated in the project. The activities planned for this project can be a source material to foreign language teachers to enhance participation in class while applying the National Standards in the classroom.
