Identifying Desirable Attributes of Nursery Rhyme Books to be Used to Foster Literacy from Birth through Elementary School
Abstract
This study analyzes 56 collections of nursery rhymes to determine the extent to which
they can promote literacy in children from birth through elementary school. The study
categorizes the books by attributes for each of four stages of growth during this period
(infancy- ages 0-2 years; preschool- ages 2-5 years; early elementary- ages 5-8 years,
and upper elementary - ages 8-11 years.) The attributes considered desirable for each of
these four periods of child development are supported by the research of numerous
scholars and experts.
