A Self-Assessment Questionnaire to Measure Dreamer Personality Traits
Abstract
In 1996, Drs. Dana Scott Spears and Ron L. Braund wrote a book entitled,
Strong Willed Child or Dreamer? In it, they described a particular personality
type in children that is often misunderstood and mistaken for strong-willed
behavior or attention deficit disorder. Because having a clearer understanding of
the Dreamer personality type can help educators and parents to better facilitate
Dreamer children, it is important to identify children who possess these
personality traits. Therefore, a Dreamer Identification Instrument was
developed. The instrument used was a self-assessment questionnaire in which
the respondents were a group of fourth grade students. Af!:er the instrument
was shown to possess face validity, it was statistically analyzed using the
Statistical Package for Social Sciences. The results presented the standard
deviations and mean scores of the responses to be fairly consistent, but the
correlation coefficients and significance levels indicated that the instrument
would not be considered to be statistically reliable.
