A Content Analysis of Caldecott Books for Use with Social Studies Standards

This study is a content analysis of the 20 Caldecott Medal books for the years 1980-1999 to determine which of the 10 themes of the National Council of Social Studies standards are addressed in the content of each book. The books were analyzed by five evaluators. The results were recorded on a checklist created by combining the 10 social studies standards themes and the titles of the 20 Caldecott books. It was found that a1120 of the books addressed at least two of the social studies standards themes. The results of this study support the use of Caldecott books to teach the 10 themes of the social studies standards.
