    Abstract
The purpose of this study was to create a curriculum guide that instructors could use for teaching the complexity of Sioux culture. The guide will provide instructors with ideas and techniques for teaching Native American culture through the analysis of a Sioux novel and a Hollywood western movie. Though this curriculum guide describes a number of activities that can be applied to any literature class, it was particularly developed to teach a multicultural literature class to English language learners in a Spanish college. This study begins with an overview of teaching guides and literary analyses of Native American texts and contains historical information about how white Americans perceived their indigenous counterparts. The second half of this study will focus on practical activities for teaching Deloria's novel Waterlily and Kevin Costner's movie Dances with Wolves through the Communicative Approach.
