Fluency Training Mathematics Vocabulary for Increased Utilization in Mathematical Writing
Abstract
This single subject design study examined the use of fluency training to teach
students mathematics vocabulary. As the students gained fluency with the mathematics
vocabulary, the study looked at how the terminology was incorporated into the students'
mathematical writing. Four students were monitored as they learned the vocabulary and
wrote about mathematics. The results of the study indicated that the students did learn
the new vocabulary and could incorporate it into their work. However, the type of
mathematical problems asked did affect how the mathematics vocabulary was used.
