The Effects of Literature Circles on Fourth Grade Students' Quality of Discussion
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects literature circles had on fourth
grade students' quality of discussion. The term quality referred to the kind of discussion
in which students engaged.
The participants in the study were five students from one heterogeneously grouped,
regular education class containing a gifted cluster. Data were gathered from the
children's discussions in the literature circle. The quality of their discussions, based
upon an analysis of audiotapes and videotapes, was coded and categorized according to
Raphael's Question-Answer Relationships taxonomy (QARs). Results from each
category, reported in raw numbers and percents and presented in tables and graphs,
indicated that students, by working together in literature circles, over time, went
beyond simple retelling of the story to higher, more complex, levels of thought as
expressed through discussion.
