    Abstract
Although culture is recognized as an essential element ln foreign language instruction, its role is still secondary to the teaching of grammar and structures in many schools. Students benefit in numerous ways from the incorporation of culture into their foreign language class: learning the target language becomes more meaningful to them, students feel more motivated, and they have the possibility of gaining a greater cross-cultural understanding, a valuable lesson ln our multicultural society. This study develops a set of criteria drawn from the research in this field that can lead to the teaching of culture most effectively. These criteria are then used as a framework to develop activities that can be used to teach culture as well as language in German classes.
