A Day to Play: The Development of a Handbook for Preparing a Steelband Performing Arts Workshop for Public Performance
Abstract
The logistical demands of carefully setting up and maintaining large and delicate
instruments are a fundamental part of the work of presenting steel band workshops, as has
been demonstrated at Humboldt State University of California, among other sites. While
these logistics are essential to presenting an organized, fun experience for young
musicians, the needs and prior experience of individuals, as well as the entire group, are
just as important and should be determined as much as possible before that first day.
These statements identifY two broad classes of organization: logistical and personal
aspects that are inherent to any workshop. Further, each contains minute details which
must be identified and planned. For all the available writing on steelbands, what seems
to be lacking from the process of presenting a one or two week workshop is a concise, yet
comprehensive, list of considerations for instructors and supporting organizations. This
writing attempts to create that list of considerations as an efficient workbook guide. The
guide assumes that funding is available and a budget in place, so the focus will be placed
on administrative and instructional aspects of presenting a workshop.
