dc.description.abstractReading is one of the means through which learners' second language acquisition is fostered. Research suggests that L2 reading can be burdensome for the early stage reader. There is a tendency described in later L2 literature to look for communicative reading material that is challenging, engaging, and understandable. In order to increase motivation, materials that are appealing and appropriate are usually brought into the L2 classroom; newspapers' excerpts, internet pages, and realia in general attempt to achieve increased exposure to L2 reading. This study uses graphic novels as a way of fostering reading in basic level L2 Spanish class. Learners performed in six different reading activities that had communication as a core. These activities involved the high interest/low frustration text offered by graphic novels. At the end of the process students responded to a questionnaire to gather their perceptions about working with graphic novels. Results present pedagogical implications that suggest that the use of this kind of material can ease L2 reading and foster acquisition in early stages of learning.en_US
