Creating an Evaluation Checklist to Aid in the Selection of Communication Applications for Individuals with Communication Needs
Abstract
Students with varying ranges of disabilities are accessing communication skills
and technology in a completely new way. Students who were unable to convey basic
needs, ideas, feelings, sentiments, and wants can now communicate these ideas by using
multiple mediums and technology such as tablets, laptops, and cellular devices. There
were three goals, which were achieved by the completion of this project. First, it was an
analysis of assistive technology in its past and present forms, including its evolution to
portable devices and the challenges that the move created. Second, it was an investigation
into the ways that AAC devices are assessed. The last goal and overall purpose was to
create a criteria based checklist that school districts and educational professionals might
use to evaluate technological applications that may be used with individuals with
disabilities that limit communication.
