Race relations has always been a significant social and political issue in the United States. In no aspect of society, however, has racial bias faded as quickly and thoroughly as in American sports. After all, Jackie Robinson first suited up for a Major League Baseball team seven years before Brown vs. Board of education. Today, we see almost complete integration on collegiate and professional rosters in sports like football, baseball, and basketball. One problem that persists, however, is the lack of African American head coaches in college football programs. This study investigated the origins and causes of this problem, and evaluated possible solutions through a review of pertinent literature, and through a survey of current Division III football coaches and players. This study used both quantitative and qualitative research to survey and analyze data from current players and coaches of three college football programs in the Midwest. The study found that college football coaches and players have differing attitudes in regards to the different problems facing black and white coaches and players, and that there is not a clear cut solution to the problems presented. At the conclusion of this study, suggestions are made and conclusions are drawn in an effort to encourage the reader to take a closer look at this long-established, yet complicated problem.
