Using Authentic, Adult-Level Digital Content in Second Semester French Classes to Narrow the Gap Between Content Capacity and Linguistic Capacity

The purpose of this study was to bridge the gap between students' content capacity- what students are mature enough to understand, appreciate and enjoy in Ll (their first language)- and their linguistic capacity- their ability to understand content presented in L2 (the target language) - by implementing the viewing of a French TV senes. This study explores how the content might be scaffolded sufficiently to make it accessible to second semester French students. Utilizing the students' scores and survey responses, the present study examines students' listening skills, their acquisition of vocabulary and their attitude towards the viewing of the TV series. Their intercultural competence is also discussed. This study can serve as a model for further research and use of videos in theforeign language classroom.
