According to the National Assessment of Education Progress (2009), only 33% of the nation's fourth graders meet the required level of proficiency in reading. Despite this, many schools continue to adopt basal reading curriculums that lack the differentiation needed to address reading proficiency issues (Allington & Me-Gill-Franzen, 2000; Walsh, 2003, Dewitz, Jones, & Leahy, 2009). In recent years, there has been a movement to emphasize research-based practices in school curriculum. This includes Reader's Workshop, a student-centered approach to reading that allows for differentiation (Fountas & Pinnell, 2006, 2001; Serafini, 2001; Ivey & Broaddus, 2000). Furthermore, many researchers believe that the most successful way to improve literacy abilities is through a school-wide approach, involving staff collaboration on curriculum (Walpole, 2004; Lashway, 2003). For the 2011-2012 school year, Kenosha Unified School District required the use of a basal reading curriculum presented in the Reader's Workshop format, without informing teachers how these two curriculum guidelines fit together. The purpose of this research project was to create a building-wide guide to cohesively integrate Reader's Workshop with a basal curriculum.
