The Thoroughness and Consistency of Sexuality Education in Public High Schools in Illinois

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issues of sexuality and AIDS education in public high schools in Illinois. This paper will point out the need for a comprehensive sexuality and AIDS education program as well as examine the flaws of abstinence-based sexuality education. The issue of condom distribution in public high schools as a means of preventing adolescent pregnancies and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, especially AIDS, 1s addressed. Surveys were mailed to forty-five public high schools in Illinois to determine if sexuality education is taught in a thorough and consistent manner throughout the school system. The results of this survey indicate that the sexuality education students receive varies drastically from. school to school. Schools with high enrollments devote more class time to sexuality education. .
