Teaching Japanese Pronunciation: Mastering Japanese Mora
Abstract
Learning a modem language, one cannot ignore the importance of pronunciation in communication. Japanese also requires proper pronunciation in communication. Throughout Japanese pronunciation, the Japanese mora is a key. Since English-speaking students who learn Japanese have a different phonological system in English, they tend to struggle in mastering the Japanese phonological system. Therefore, in this thesis, the phonological features of Japanese sounds are examined. Typical problems that students have in learning Japanese pronunciation are viewed to clarify what problems students have. Old methods were not necessarily conscious about the problems that students had. The methods considering the problems are necessary to lead students to a better pronunciation. As a result, several methods are examined in order to conquer the problems.
