    Abstract
This study examined how family background and environment fostered the creative development of an exemplary creator: C. S. Lewis. First, the data were organized, analyzed and interpreted in a biographical sketch of Lewis's early life. The research questions were used as a framework for this presentation. It was found that Lewis's ancestors, grandparents, parents, brother and other adults; the environment in which he lived; and other influences such as his high intelligence and experiences of joy fostered his creative development. Then, Gardner's characteristics. of an exemplary creator were used as an organizational tool in this study. C. S. Lewis's early life was compared and contrasted to the early life of Gardner's portrait of an exemplary creator. It was found that the early life of Lewis and the early life of Gardner's exemplary creator had many commonalities. This study is significant because it gives educators a perspective on the development of writing talent in a gifted and talented individual. Educators may be able to identify students exhibiting gifted behaviors, and then guide and encourage these students to develop their creative talents to their fullest potential.
