Student Perceptions of the Effects of Strict Athletic Eligibility Requirements
Abstract
There has been a growing controversy surrounding the role of academics versus athletics in America's schools. While some authorities state that athletics are an integral part of education, others argue that athletics have become too important at the expense of academics. This debate has been further fueled by the National Commission on Excellence in Education releasing A Nation at Risk in 1983, as well as publicity of large scale abuses taking place in high school and college athletic programs. At the center of this controversy, is the growing trend towards stricter eligibility requirements for student athletes.
