When high school teachers of Spanish and French integrate culture and language learning, students learn valuable lessons for understanding themselves and other people in our multicultural societies. Even though culture is recognized as a vital component of a second language class, it is still taught as an aside in many schools. It is important to develop activities so that teachers can teach language and at the same time teach the students to think critically about culture. The purpose of this research is to find a core of pedagogical criteria to guide the appropriate teaching of culture in the language classroom as determined by researchers in this field. Using these criteria as a framework, this study proposes to develop activities that can be used to teach culture as well as language in French and Spanish classes.en_US
