Gender Bias in Jack Prelutsky's Poetry
MetadataShow full item record
Gender bias in four of Jack Prelutsky' s poetry books was examined. A content analysis on The New Kid on The Block, Something Big Has Been Here, Beneath a Blue Umbrella, and A Pizza the Size of the Sun analyzed the contents' portrayal of male and female characters. This study looked at the number of male and female characters, the number and types of male and female occupations, and the number and types of male and female behaviors. The results indicate that Prelutsky' s poetry does contain gender bias. Males were portrayed more than females in all of the above categories. Furthermore, males were less likely to be portrayed in traditional roles than were females. This study raised the issue that gender bias in literature is apparent in much of today' s children's literature and that readers not only need to be able to detect it, but must also be equipped to deal with it.
