Factors Affecting Enrollment of Vocational Classes in High School
MetadataShow full item record
A situational analysis was conducted in a Racine high school to explore factors which affect students in their choices of elective classes. With the information gathered from the survey, an appropriate market plan would be developed to recruit students for Family and Consumer Education. The review of the literature identified factors that might possibly create barriers to enrollments in vocational classes. Such things as government policies on education, demographics of the student population, external influences such as counselors, gender enrollment patterns and student characteristics were researched. The survey indicated that students from different ethnic backgrounds, and a variety of academic abilities are enrolled in F. & C.E. classes. It also indicated that there was still an unbalanced gender enrollment. The data collected from this study concurred with other reseach that reported students chose elective classes because of career goals and looked for classes that would be beneficial to them. The data also indicated that students chose their own classes rather than following advice from parents, friends, counselors or teachers.
