Cultural Stereotyping and Foreign-Language Learning: Interaction and Correlation
MetadataShow full item record
The main purpose of this study was to determine whether cultural stereotyping among college students changes, fades, or even disappears while learning a targeted culture's language. In order to gather data about cultural stereotypes, a survey was handed out to 75 students of a small mid-western liberal arts college. Three groups of students (consisting of non-speakers, intermediate-level learners, and advanced learners of German) were asked to give their stereotypes of Germany, Germans, and German culture. The collected data were examined and compared in order to find general statements about the relation between cultural stereotyping and foreign-language learning.
