A Senior Performance Recital

Abstract

As a music major with an emphasis on instrumental performance, it is of the utmost importance that this senior thesis represents a culmination of the various abilities necessary in presenting music to the community. As such, this senior thesis will take the form of a student recital featuring solo works and works with piano accompaniment. To showcase a full understanding of the works in both a musical and cultural sense, full program notes will be presented alongside the recital. These program notes will include artistic interpretations informed by not just the musical form of the work, but also the history and culture surrounding the piece and the composer. As this requires additional research and analysis, all program notes will provide citations as shown in the Chicago Manual of Style. The repertoire presented in this recital showcases the demands of a performing musician, including: a sense of agility and fluidity throughout the body, a secureness in intonation, a strong foundation in rhythm, an understanding of traditional performance practices, a sensitivity in artistic expression, and an ability to collaborate effectively with other musicians. This repertoire will include: Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major, Hob. VIIb/1 by Franz Joseph Haydn, Cello Sonata No. 3, Op. 69 by Ludwig van Beethoven, and Hungarian Rhapsody, Op. 68. by David Popper.
