    Description
4cr This course is a general introduction to Islamic law and jurisprudence. It will examine both the classical law and contemporary developments, giving particular attention to the sources of this law and to its scope in personal and communal life. In theory Islamic law is universal for all Muslims (since it is based on divine command and Prophetic example), but in practice the complexity of legal reasoning (leading to different interpretations) and an emphasis on flexibility have given rise to multiple legal traditions, each with a differing quality. Islamic law includes but is not necessarily be limited to hygiene, worship, daily routines, familial obligations, and financial dealings. Prerequisites: REL 1000
