Meyer Musical Theatre Thesis
Abstract
My name is Tyler Meyer and I am a senior Music: Musical Theater and Marketing double major. As a capstone to my Musical Theater education at Carthage College I will be portraying Steven Kodaly in She Loves Me by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, directed by Thomas Novak. This musical puts a twist on a traditional love story where a man and woman meet and fall in love. Within this show, the plot explores what happens when a man meets a woman and they fall into a feud. Constantly trying to outdo and embarrass each other, it is no wonder these two are completely unaware that they are lovers, writing each other letters through a lonely hearts club. Kodaly, a sauve, young bachelor in his late twenties has little to no interest in the frivolous matters of the hearts of his fellow clerks. Kodaly has affairs of his own to keep in order; his most recent and serious is the pursuit of fellow shop employee, Ilona. Through this theatrical event I will be exploring the vocal, acting, and dancing styles of the golden age of musical theater. I will be performing Steven Kodaly as an exploration of the golden age womanizer and utilization of various vocal colors and techniques that match the more classical musical style of the show.
