Comparing Perceptions of Technology Between Teachers at 1:1 Technology Schools and Teachers at Non-1:1 Technology Schools

Many schools across the country are incorporating technology into their curriculum through 1:1 device programs. These programs, which pair each student with a personal laptop, tablet, iPad, or other device, are becoming increasingly common as schools try to equip students with 21st century learning skills. This study’s purpose was to compare perceptions of technology use between teachers at 1:1 device schools and teachers at non-1:1 device schools. Surveys regarding technology use were distributed to 535 public and private middle school and high school teachers across Wisconsin. Results from the survey were analyzed using Student t-tests. The analysis suggested that teacher perceptions of technology differed significantly between 1:1 device schools and non-1:1 device schools. Teachers at non-1:1 device schools wished students used technology more often than teachers at 1:1 device schools. Teachers at non-1:1 device teachers also reported more student engagement than teachers at 1:1 device schools. Teachers at 1:1 schools reported that they used technology in class more often than teachers at non-1:1 schools but agreed more with the idea that technology encourages off-task behavior than teachers at non-1:1 schools. Overall, these results have important implications for students, teachers, and administrators as technology becomes more and more prevalent in education. i
