Thermodynamic Probability of Formation and Magnetic Moments of FeO2(n)+ Clusters

In the field of nanoscience, interest is growing in the area of magnetic nanomaterials because of their wide range of applications. In the search for new magnetic nanomaterials, iron oxide clusters have generated much interest because of their large magnetic moments. In the study reported here, various sizes of iron oxide clusters were investigated through density functional theory calculations and mass spectrometry to determine thermodynamic properties and probability of formation. The clusters contained an even number of oxygen atoms bound to iron via peroxo-type bonds. It was discovered that the FeO10+ cluster is largest cluster that is thermodynamically favorable and present the largest magnetic moment of the clusters investigated.
