In this thesis, studies of the oxidation of mercury and the analysis of mercury in flue gas will be presented. Through quantum mechanical calculations, Wilcox showed that HOCl is a better oxidizer of mercury than HCl and Cl2. This result can be applied for the removal of mercury in flue gas. The optimal conditions for a gold-plated iridium Nano-Band array ultramicroelectrode for the detection of mercury were studied by Xiao, et al. Applications of this research will allow on site testing of flue gas samples containing mercury.
