This undergraduate thesis will explore the progression of communications technology in Japan over the last century and attempt to link Strauss-Howe generational theory to the evolution of Japanese media. Despite its place as a world leader, Japan has long remained isolated from other countries and has unintentionally created a globally accepted stereotype of what Japan stands for that is vastly outdated. In this thesis, the past and future world view of Japan and the Japanese as a people will be explored as well as theorizing the next frontier of communications technology in relation to Japan.
Over the coming decades Japan would take cultural cues from the Western world and adapt them to account for a Japanese audience, revolutionizing the previous structure of internally produced culture and entertainment. This thesis will focus on rationalizing and categorizing the evolution of Japanese communications technology over the past 100 years as well as postulate on possible upcoming advancements of this technology in Japan.
