dc.description.abstractDuring the 20th century, solo repertoire for the trumpet started to become even more dynamic, versatile, and experimental. Much of this was brought upon by composers’ development of contemporary writing styles as well as the birth of jazz music in the United States. These elements transformed the role of the trumpet in solo and ensemble settings by introducing new timbres and chromatically complex melodies. Improvisational jazz also transformed the nature of trumpet playing by limiting the use of written music and emphasizing spontaneous musical creativity. Although stylistic differences can make barriers between the worlds of concert and jazz music, both genres contributed greatly to one another melodically and technically. In this recital, I will focus on the transformative elements in trumpet playing, how composers have fused elements of jazz and classical music over time and the stylistic spectrum of trumpet repertoire.en_US
